Background

Dr. Jacob Whipple had built a thriving solo practice but found himself constrained by the demands of managing every aspect of the business. He wanted to expand his services, invest in continuing education, and reach more patients — yet lacked the time, resources, and support to do it effectively. When his practice became part of Cornerstone, which later partnered with P1 Dental Partners, Dr. Whipple saw the opportunity to achieve sustainable growth while maintaining his focus on patient care.

Approach

Through P1’s partnership model, Dr. Whipple gained access to expert operational support, CE programs for himself and his team, and a collaborative network of like-minded providers. Dr. Michael Pitt was among P1 Dental Partners’ original partner doctors — an experienced clinician with a loyal patient following and a thriving practice. When Dr. David Hazelrigg joined P1 in 2022, he brought both a modern facility and the ambition to continue growing his practice. Together, the doctors saw an opportunity to strengthen access to care and build something greater — by combining their practices and expanding their shared space.

Challenge

When you join two successful practices into one, there’s always a little trepidation. Will the teams be able to mesh? Will one doctor need to change the way he practices? Can the administrative staff seamlessly integrate different systems and protocols? Those questions—and many more—were front of mind for both doctors. Dr. Pitt’s long-established office had reached its capacity, limiting patient access and future growth, while Dr. Hazelrigg had the physical space but had not yet built out additional operatories. Growth would require investment in infrastructure, technology, and a shared vision for the future.

Solution

Fortunately, both Dr. Hazelrigg and Dr. Pitt have always led with a patient-first mentality and surrounded themselves with outstanding teams. With support from P1 Dental Partners’ operations team, the practices were successfully merged under one roof. P1 facilitated the design and buildout of new operatories, equipped the expanded facility with state-of-the-art technology, and helped integrate systems and staff across both teams. In August 2023, Dr. Doreen Wascow joined P1 Dental Partners, bringing her long-standing practice into the organization. By coincidence, another P1 partner practice — led by Dr. Caroline Shepherd and Dr. Ashley Watson — operated on the first floor of the very same building in the northern suburb of Chicago, Mundelein. What began as two distinct offices has evolved into a collaborative, thriving example of how integration can elevate patient care and team performance.

Approach

Rather than operate independently, both teams leaned into the spirit of partnership that defines P1. The doctors and staff began sharing knowledge, resources, and ideas — from clinical protocols to front-office workflows. The front desk teams communicate daily, coordinating schedules, sharing learnings in practice management tools, and helping one another navigate new efficiencies.

Dr. Shepherd shared, “I’ve appreciated Dr. Wascow’s advice on running a practice. Our front desk staff communicates daily, which has been helpful with showing each other all the different Ascend features. We’ve also been able to share clinical staff and materials, which has made both teams stronger.”

Upstairs, Dr. Wascow and Dr. Shena Patel have built a seamless partnership focused on clinical quality and patient experience. Downstairs, Dr. Shepherd and Dr. Watson continue to model collaboration in every aspect of their work — proving that great outcomes come from great teamwork.
